John Adam Kern, wife and children emigrated from Alsace, France, and after a short stay in the United States had removed to Ontario, Canada, where there was a colony of Alsatian Lutherans near Stratford. They did not remain in Canada long, but moved on to Winneshiek County, Iowa. In 1854 John Adam Kern and Philip Pfister organized a German Lutheran church in the community of Locust, Iowa.
